Dear Mr. Pope

The oldest existing military unit in the history of the world. The Pontifical Swiss Guard has protected the Pope since 1505. The Hundred Swiss were created in 1480 when Louis XI retained a Swiss company for his personal guard and they followed him into war. King Frances of France used 120,000 Swiss mercenaries in his wars. They fought in the French Revolution. . Four Swiss infantry regiments were employed by Napoleon, serving in both Spain and Russia. Many joined the French foreign legion, to serve in Algeria. Bonus, one requirement is they have to be bachelors.

The Swiss Constitution, amended in 1874, forbade all military capitulations and recruitment of Swiss by foreign powers, except to volunteer, until 1927. The only exception is to the Vatican. Pope Sixtus IV (1471–1484) had already made an alliance with the Swiss Confederation and built barracks in Via Pellegrino, after foreseeing the possibility of recruiting Swiss mercenaries. Pope Innocent VIII (1484–1492) used them against the Duke of Milan. During the time of the Borgia, the Italian Wars began in which the Swiss mercenaries were a fixture in the front lines among the warring factions, sometimes for France and sometimes for the Holy Roman Empire.  When Cardinal della Rovere became Pope Julius II in 1503, he asked the Swiss to provide him with a constant corps of 200 Swiss mercenaries. This was made possible through the financing of the German merchants, who had invested in the Pope and saw it fit to protect their investment. In September 1505, the first contingent of 150 soldiers started their march towards Rome, and entered the city on January 22,1506, the official date of the Guard’s foundation.

There are five thousand religions in the world and the United States has pretty much all of them, including spiritual and atheist. You can find people here who are practicing everything from Hinduism, Sikh, Tao, Judaism,  Scientology, Wiccan and agnostic, to Islam and Satanism.  All forms of Christianity exist here, from Catholic to Protestant, Southern Baptist, Lutheran to Westboro Baptist.

Forgive me for being rude Mr. Pontif Sir, but some of our families left England, Scotland, France, Rome, etc., to escape religious persecution. There was a time when the Catholic church could torture and kill anyone not following their exact doctrine. Constantine in the 3rd century, forcing it upon the pagans. Persecution of Martin Luther. Thirty year war. King James. The crusades. Persecution of gay people.

Our forefathers came to the new land and demanded the right to worship as they please, or not at all. They eventually created a magical, superpower document called the Constitution, that would always protect their right to do exactly that and they fought a war to establish it. Our forefathers ensured that all future generations and citizens would have the right to separation of church and state. Our government isn’t supposed to be able to create any laws to enforce any religion on us, use it against us in any courtroom, or force religion on our children in any public school.

Our forefathers were also intelligent enough to give us a way to always protect our rights, including the right to believe as we wish, under our 2nd Amendment. Our right to bear arms. Our Bill of Rights must always trump any other laws or religious doctrine, in order for American citizens to remain free.  I apologize Sir, but does it not seem hypocritical of a man with one hundred and thirty four armed guards, to tell us to lay down our weapons, or we aren’t Christian?
