Most of America has heard the news of how Muslims in Libya overran the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi and killed the U.S. Ambassador and three other Americans. They also heard that the militants torn down the U.S. flag and raised a black flag over the embassy.
But how many Americans know or understand what the black flag means?
Many of our military men and women who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan know the significance of the black flag all too well.
Black flags meant the truce was over and that they are a warning to locals and others that danger is present and attacks are near.

In Egypt, police and army personnel formed defensive lines around the U.S. Embassy in an effort to prevent demonstrators from advancing, but not before the protesters affixed a black flag atop a ladder in the American compound.
In Egypt, some of the protesters scaled the embassy walls, went into a courtyard, and took down the American flag. They tried (and failed) to burn it, then tore it up, and then put up a black Islamic flag.
