Hundreds join the Day of Ashura procession through Balsall Heath

Hundreds of Muslims from all over Birmingham took part in an annual procession in Balsall Heath to mark the beginning of the Islamic year and the Day of Ashura.

The procession from Edward Road to Clifton Road mosque also saw several worshippers take part in ritual self-flagellation for the 10th day of the month of Muharram, when Shia Muslims mourn the martyrdom of Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed.

The date is also commemorated by Sunni Muslims as the day God saved Moses from the Egyptians.
