Malaysians to Trump- “You will not continue to insult the feelings of Muslims”
Malaysian sharia laws: Parliament to debate hudud bill that could introduce stonings and amputations in state of Kelantan
The Malaysian Parliament is set to debate a controversial bill that could see stricter forms of sharia law introduced in the state of Kelantan, but critics have warned the so called hudud bill would result in whippings and even the amputations of limbs for crimes such as theft.
Kelantan’s state capital Kota Bahru is deeply religious and many of its citizens live by a strict adherence to Islam.
At shops and supermarkets there are separate queues for males and females, while signs advising women to cover up are common outside offices and government buildings.
“Under the hudud law, pregnancy of a single woman would be regarded as evidence of having committed illicit sex.”
The new law was approved in the state assembly of Kelantan, which is governed by a conservative Islamist party, PAS, and where nightclubs and cinemas are banned.
The northeastern state has been pushing for the adoption of a strict Islamic penal code, called ‘hudud’, that would provide for punishments such as stoning for adultery and amputations for theft.
It is unclear what crimes will be punishable by public caning but it is thought to include adultery.
Islamic law is implemented in all Malaysian states but is restricted to family issues such as divorce and inheritance, as well as sharia crimes involving Muslims, such as consuming alcohol and adultery. Criminal cases are handled by federal law.
Critics say the amendment could be unconstitutional and infringe on the rights of religious minorities.
Ethnic Malay Muslims make up more than 60 per cent of Malaysia’s 32 million people and attempts to implement stricter forms of sharia law in recent years have raised concerns among members of the ethnic Chinese, Indian and other minorities.

Jerusalem: Malaysia army ‘ready’ to play role
Malaysian defence minister has said that the United States’ decision to make Jerusalem the capital of Israel was “a slap in the face for the entire Muslim world”, pointing out that his country’s military is prepared to perform its duty if its services are required.
“We have to be prepared for any possibilities. The ATM [Malaysian Armed Forces] has always been ready, waiting for instructions from the top leadership,” the Malaysian state news agency Bernama quoted Hishammuddin Hussein as saying.
Muslims in Asia rally against Trump’s Jerusalem move
Muslims in Indonesia and Malaysia protested outside the U.S. embassies Friday against President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
In Kuala Lumpur, more than 1,000 protesters led by Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin marched from a nearby mosque after Friday prayers to the U.S. Embassy, halting traffic as they chanted “Long live Islam” and “Destroy Zionists.” Many carried banners, some of which said “Free Palestine” and “Jerusalem is the capital of Palestine.”
Khairy addressed Trump in a speech after handing a protest note to an embassy official, saying “Mr President, this is an illegal announcement. Jerusalem is an occupied territory. You must not even set foot in Jerusalem. … The world will rise against the United States.”
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 8 — The police confirmed today that it has kicked off investigations against a rally in front of the United States embassy in the capital earlier today protesting Washington’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
Sinar Harian quoted Wangsa Maju police chief Supt Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif as confirming that the rally is being investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012.
