Malaysians to Trump- “You will not continue to insult the feelings of Muslims”

Malaysian sharia laws: Parliament to debate hudud bill that could introduce stonings and amputations in state of Kelantan

The Malaysian Parliament is set to debate a controversial bill that could see stricter forms of sharia law introduced in the state of Kelantan, but critics have warned the so called hudud bill would result in whippings and even the amputations of limbs for crimes such as theft.

Kelantan’s state capital Kota Bahru is deeply religious and many of its citizens live by a strict adherence to Islam.

At shops and supermarkets there are separate queues for males and females, while signs advising women to cover up are common outside offices and government buildings.

“Under the hudud law, pregnancy of a single woman would be regarded as evidence of having committed illicit sex.”

Kuala Lumpur rally calls for stricter Islamic law
A massive rally in the heart of Kuala Lumpur in support of proposals to allow Islamic courts to impose more severe punishments has raised fears of growing division in Malaysia’s multicultural society. The amendments to Act 355, expected to be discussed in parliament when it sits next month, will allow the Islamic courts, which rule on religious matters and family law for Muslims, to impose a jail sentence of as long as 30 years, as many as 100 strokes of the cane and a fine of more than $22,000.
About 40 percent of Malaysia’s population is not Muslim, and the country has a dual legal system, with secular courts responsible for all civil and criminal matters.
“Bleak future for Malaysia’ as public canings allowed under Islamic law reform

The new law was approved in the state assembly of Kelantan, which is governed by a conservative Islamist party, PAS, and where nightclubs and cinemas are banned.

The northeastern state has been pushing for the adoption of a strict Islamic penal code, called ‘hudud’, that would provide for punishments such as stoning for adultery and amputations for theft.

It is unclear what crimes will be punishable by public caning but it is thought to include adultery.

Islamic law is implemented in all Malaysian states but is restricted to family issues such as divorce and inheritance, as well as sharia crimes involving Muslims, such as consuming alcohol and adultery. Criminal cases are handled by federal law.

Critics say the amendment could be unconstitutional and infringe on the rights of religious minorities.

Ethnic Malay Muslims make up more than 60 per cent of Malaysia’s 32 million people and attempts to implement stricter forms of sharia law in recent years have raised concerns among members of the ethnic Chinese, Indian and other minorities.
