Michelle Obama’s official portrait looks nothing like her
The Obamas were back in Washington on Monday for the unveiling of their official portraits that will hang in the National Portrait Gallery. While Barack Obama’s portrait — the former president seated in a chair surrounded by flowers and leaves– was intriguing, it was the depiction of former first lady Michelle Obama that stole the show — primarily because some corners of the Internet didn’t think the portrait looked much like Mrs. Obama.
Obama portraits unveiled at National Portrait Gallery
The National Portrait Gallery on Monday unveiled portraits of former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama, both of whom selected acclaimed African-American artists to portray them.
“Pretty sharp!” Barack Obama quipped of his portrait, painted by Kehinde Wiley — an artist best known for his vibrant, large-scale paintings of African-Americans. The former president also joked about how he had to negotiate to reduce the number of grays hairs and make his ears look smaller in the painting.
